Yes, there really is one choice that determines your success or failure in life. For some unknown reason, some folks never think about this and drift through life undecided. Unlike college or graduate school, in life you do not ever have to declare a major. Nevertheless, having goals and a mission/a direction in life is a major help. This is exactly why children often idolize their parents and heroes from sports, school or their community. They learn by modeling others. However, this is even more important than choosing an idol. Ultimately, the definitive choice that determines one's success or failure in life is whether you decide to be a victim or a victor.
As we get older and more experienced, we learn that luck does not always go our way at times. Sometimes that luck also comes in streaks, so we should to look to our faith in God and commit to trusting in him. This is commonly referred to as being able to "let go and let God." All Christians, Catholics, Jews etc. need to make the choice of whether to live life as a victim or a victor. Victims are often paralyzed by fear, slowed by being timid and tend to give up on goals much faster. An associate of mine joined me for a business lunch at a popular restaurant recently. The waitress showed up with a cheery smile and received a five-minute long summary of all the bad things that happened to my colleague since birth.
My jaw dropped in amazement and I had to distract the victim/waitress to order lunch from the menu and save her. Who knows how long this could have gone on? I explained to him as a person of faith, that God did not create you to be a weak worm of the dust. He made you his highest creation on purpose. Clearly, we can choose to live life as a victor anytime. Victors focus on the good in life and make things happen by being constructive and choosing a career where they help others. Victors fall seven times and stand up eight. Winners produce and producers win. Focus on it.
Anthony Robbins taught me to "Live my life as if I could not fail…" when I was younger and shortly after I bought my own home and my first investment property in the same month. Integrity Matters – Most people are smart enough to judge you by your actions and behavior vs. labels competitors/others brand you with. Manufacturing here in the US is making a comeback due to the extremely high production of the American workforce, the 3D printer and the difficulty/complexity of manufacturing in abroad (the instructions are typically lost in translation multiple times resulting in increased costs). I have noticed that even Apple Inc. is executing plans to manufacture here in America now (finally). Few if any managers and executives want to leave the manufacturing field. I normally ask them what they think their employer's prospects are for more hiring vs. layoffs going forward. The positive answers I received frequently mentioned American innovation.
Another, huge sector of the economy, real estate and home building is already one year into a slow steady comeback. Large cities with abandoned, foreclosed homes are either demolishing them or selling them for a song to be renovated. In many prosperous areas, real estate agents report a shortage of homes for sale on the market. Housing is such a huge part of the American economy that no recovery is genuine until housing participates. The education, health care and pharmaceutical/biomedical fields are still experiencing steady growth. As the government continues to print more money and the dollar continues to weaken further the commodities and agricultural sectors will continue to strengthen as well.
The stock markets are doing well with the Dow, Nasdaq, S&P and Russell 2000 all near multi-year highs. Corporate profits have had yet another record high year, real estate prices are still trending up and our IRAs/401Ks have recovered nicely. This "wealth recovery" is so vital to continued consumer confidence because our economy is 85% consumer driven. All this good news is remarkable considering that businesses and consumers everywhere have seen continued double-digit increases in health care insurance costs over the last ten years. Unfortunately, the Chevy Volt didn't turn out to be a legendary success story as promised. However, Tesla's Model S just earned Motor Trend's "Car of the Year Award" for 2013. Tesla has definitely become another legendary American success story like Boeing, Microsoft, Ford, Apple, Google, Facebook etc. Meanwhile, the technology/IT/software industry continues to grow and distribute products and services worldwide. Our entertainment industry (TV, Film, Sports, Theater, Music, Gaming etc.) is still the most successful in the world.
The Energy Industry is booming like never before thanks to the advancement of environmentally sound fracking techniques, newly-discovered US reserves in the ground and the booming oil and gas industry in general. At $110 per barrel, many of the oil wells that were previously capped are producing again in the US. Reliable sources tell us that America now has more than enough oil & gas resources to be energy independent. (However, we still want to save some of our supplies for the future.) Better yet, the US has quietly become the preferred oil refinery resource abroad. The energy industry is generating tens of billions of dollars a month in revenue now. The trickle down effect from all this wealth means more jobs and prosperity in the US for decades to come.
Finally, according to the Institute for Supply Management's recent press release the service industry is growing at a record pace. This confirms the economy is in expansion. So, while there are still some struggling industries out there at the moment (construction and retail). America will be full steam ahead in 2014 thanks to this economic recovery and trickle down economics. Please, do your part to keep Americans employed by making sure your family buys American!
